Who invented the first fax machine?

Growing up, I always saw fax machines in offices and wondered: who came up with the first one and what was its first transmission like?

A fax machine transmits documents and images via telephone lines. Edwin Belin invented the first practical U.S. fax machine, the Belinograph, in 1924. The first transmission was a simple hand-drawn line sketch. It worked by scanning the image and sending electrical signals to a receiver.
